Department of Integrative Bioscience and Biotechnology
Understand the phenomena of life and of living organisms utilizing the principle of promoting human welfare
--
Introduction
The Department of Integrative Bioscience and Biotechnology provides education and research in bioscience and biotechnology, with a focus on emerging bio-based fields. As biotechnology increasingly integrates with other scientific and engineering disciplines, it plays an important role in healthcare, medicine, and environmental sustainability. Established in 2013 as a flagship program at Sejong University, the department offers a multidisciplinary curriculum in bioscience and bioengineering, designed to cultivate skilled professionals who can lead next-generation bio-convergence industries by combining fundamental life sciences with applied technologies.
The curriculum is built on essential foundational disciplines required to understand the basic processes of living systems, including molecular biology, microbiology, genetics, physiology, biochemistry, and immunology. Based on this strong scientific foundation, the department emphasizes education and research in advanced applied fields that contribute to disease prevention and treatment. These fields include nano-bioengineering, vaccine development, bio(chemical) engineering, novel drug design, aging and longevity science, stem cell research, and brain and cognitive science.
The department is supported by faculty members who are actively engaged in research across diverse areas of bioscience and biotechnology. To develop the core competencies necessary for interdisciplinary research, first-year students complete foundational courses in basic sciences. In subsequent years, students take specialized courses in integrative bioscience and biotechnology through a structured and distinctive educational program. In addition, the department operates an integrated bachelor’s–master’s program to provide advanced training for students, preparing them with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills for careers in research, industry, and healthcare.
