Introduction
The Department of Defense Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Convergence Engineering at Sejong University is a military contract-based program established to cultivate Marine Corps officers who will lead advanced defense science and technology grounded in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics. We nurture “smart defense” leaders who combine technical competence with military professionalism.
Founded under an agreement signed in 2024 between the Republic of Korea Marine Corps and Sejong University, the department aims to develop defense specialists with strong expertise in AI and robotics. Beyond a theory-centered approach, the program focuses on preparing Marine Corps officers with practical, field-applicable technical skills and solid military expertise.
Our curriculum spans AI, robotics, communication networks, defense policy, and military studies to build the technological foundation required for future battlefields. Through an interdisciplinary, problem-solving education framework, students take part in hands-on programs such as Creative Software Basic Design, Defense Capstone Design, and undergraduate research opportunities, where they learn to lead and solve complex, real-world challenges demanded in maritime and defense environments.
All graduates are commissioned as officers in the Republic of Korea Marine Corps and take the lead in both the research and operational application of advanced defense technologies. We also provide robust institutional support—including full scholarships, dormitory accommodation, and opportunities to participate in research projects—to help students grow to their full potential.
This department is the starting point for the next generation of Marine Corps officers who combine technology and leadership, and for smart defense professionals who will drive innovation in national defense. Career Path after Graduation
Graduates develop into smart officers equipped with advanced defense science and technology capabilities and military leadership. After completing a designated period of military education, graduates are commissioned as Second Lieutenants in the Marine Corps and receive salary and allowances comparable to those of a Grade 7 government official (based on the Second Lieutenant rank). During service, officers can expand professional and global competencies through various opportunities such as domestic and international joint exercises, training on new weapon systems, and government-funded commissioned graduate education. High-performing officers may be selected for long-term service and can pursue advancement to positions equivalent to Grade 5 or higher public service levels. Officers who serve 20 years or more may become eligible for military pension benefits. For officers planning to leave the service after seven years (rather than pursuing long-term service), the department actively supports career placement across diverse sectors—including defense industries, public enterprises, public institutions, finance, and major private companies—recognizing their engineering degree as well as leadership and organizational management skills gained through Marine Corps service. In addition, graduates may receive preferential consideration when applying to master’s and doctoral programs after discharge, providing both expanded career options and long-term stability.
