  • 1) The concept of Accreditation
Engineering education accreditation system is a system that grants accreditation to engineering programs to guarantee the quality of education required by education consumers through rigorous evaluation of engineering education.
  • 2) Purpose of Accreditation
To contribute to promoting the development of engineering education and nurturing competent engineering and technical personnel by proposing educational program standards and guidelines for university engineering and related education, and implementing certification and consulting through them
    - First, it ensures that graduates who have completed the accredited program are ready to effectively enter the real world engineering field.
    - Second, identify whether the educational institution meets the accreditation criteria and whether the subdivided engineering education program meets the accreditation criteria.
    - Third, encourage the introduction of new and innovative methods in engineering education, and provide guidance and advice on engineering education programs.
    - Fourth, It promoting Advances in engineering education, It contributes to producing engineering and technical personnel with the skills required by industry and society and industry.

    - It is advantageous for evaluation and support from Society.
It's advantageous to get a job. Industrial companies prefer graduate who got ABEEK certification

Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea

The Korea Institute of Engineering Education was established in 1999 to improve the quality of engineering education and foster practical talents along with the promotion of joining the Washington Convention, an international organization for engineering education in Korea.

The accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea was founded on August 30, 1999 with the voluntary participation of the Korea Institute of Engineering and Technology, the Ministry of Education and Human Resources, the Ministry of Industrial Resources, the National Council of Engineering, industries, and engineering-related professional societies.

Sejong University's engineering education accreditation agency is each program (major), and the engineering education center supports and manages its work.

Accreditation for Engineering Education in foreign country

  • 1) Developed countries are promoting the reform and internalization of curriculum and educational environment level to establish a new paradigm for innovation in engineering education.
  • 2) The United states: ABET is a coalition of 29 US engineering professional organizations, 95% of US engineering colleges participate in ABET certification.
  • 3) Japan: Implementation of the Japanese technician education recognition system(JABEE;Japan Accreditation Board for Engineering Education).
  • 4) The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology(ABET) certification system is becoming internationally standardized through the Washington Accord on the International Mutual Cerificaion of Engineering Education.
  • 5) When ABEEK joins Washington Accord, graduates who have completed the ABEEK course at universities certified for engineering education in Korea will be recognized as first-class engineers regardless of country.

CRITERIA FOR ACCREDITING ENGINEERING/COMPUTING PROGRAMS

All engineering/computing education programs are demand-driven and outcome-based education.

The programs shall satisfy the following eight criteria:

  • 1) Program Educational Objectives
  • 2) Program Outcomes
  • 3) Curriculum
  • 4) Students
  • 5) Faculty
  • 6) Educational Environment
  • 7) Program Improvement
  • 8) Program Criteria

The engineering education program are consists of 4 or more years of curriculum.

Students who finished 4 or more years of curriculum awards Bachelor of Engineering.

In particular, the engineering education curriculum is closely related to the students’ regular course.

Each Engineering Programs’ curriculum should be systematically organized and continuously improved to achieve the Program outcomes. In addition, Design-related subjects should be systematically organized to increase the graduates’ field adaptability.

Especially in senior, Capstone Design Project based on knowledge and skills learned in junior curriculum and taking into account practical limitations such as industrial standards, economy, environment, ethics, safety, society, politics etc.

The minimum number of credits required for each subject area suggested by the Engineering Education Accreditation Board as a standard

  • 1) Mathematics, basic science, and computer science subjects follow the credit requirements set for each program.
  • 2) Major subjects and design courses follow the certification standards for each field set by KEC2015.
  • 3) In order to achieve the program's educational goals, 14 credits or more of courses designated as specialized liberal arts courses must be completed. With the implementation of the single accreditation system from 2016, new students of Sejong University must complete the courses that are structured based on the standards presented by ABEEK.

Things to do

Students who choose the Engineering Education Accreditation (ABEEK) course should be able to prove that they have the ability to major-based, basic engineering literacy, and engineering practice. To this end, students must complete designated courses recognized by universities and continue to consult with professors to meet the purpose of the certification program. In addition, one must continuously record and keep the portfolio of one's learning outcomes up-to-date, and participate in class evaluation to improve classes.

  • (1) Compliance with the subject areas that students must complete.
  • (2) Student portfolio management.
The portfolio is both an educational achievement of the entire university course, and a record that can encompass one's knowledge, abilities, and experiences. It is a data that can self-evaluate the degree of achievement of educational goals and the level of achievement of learning outcomes for a given curriculum, so you should pay attention to management. It includes not only all the contents obtained in the course of completing the program, but also regular results of students' social activities after graduation.
  • 1) Student's personal information and Activity record summary table.
  • 2) Report card.

What is AACSB (International Accreditation for Business Education)?

AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) is the world’s largest and most prestigious international accreditation body for business and accounting education. Established in 1916, AACSB evaluates institutions based on rigorous and comprehensive global standards covering education quality, research, faculty qualifications, student support, and overall academic operations.

AACSB accreditation is widely recognized as the most authoritative and trusted international accreditation in the field of business education. Among approximately 16,000 business schools worldwide, only about 1,000 institutions (around 6%) have earned AACSB accreditation.

World-renowned business schools such as Harvard University, Stanford University, Yale University, MIT, the University of Pennsylvania (Wharton), London Business School, and INSEAD hold AACSB accreditation, demonstrating that AACSB represents the global benchmark for excellence in management education.

AACSB-accredited institutions undergo a rigorous reaccreditation review every six years to ensure continuous improvement in educational quality, innovation, and global competitiveness. Institutions that fail to meet AACSB standards may lose their accreditation.

In addition, AACSB accreditation fosters mutual trust among accredited institutions, enabling international cooperation such as student exchange programs, credit transfer agreements, and dual-degree programs.

AACSB Accreditation Status and Achievements of Sejong University

Sejong University earned AACSB accreditation in 2007, becoming the fourth university in Korea to do so, following Seoul National University, KAIST, and Korea University.

Since then, Sejong University has successfully achieved four consecutive AACSB reaccreditations in 2012, 2017, and 2022.

Notably, Sejong University became the first Korean university with fewer than 10,000 undergraduate students to receive integrated AACSB accreditation covering all business education programs, including undergraduate programs, general graduate programs (master’s and doctoral), and the MBA program. This achievement officially recognizes the university’s educational excellence and global competitiveness.

With its fourth consecutive accreditation in 2022, Sejong University became one of only three universities in Korea to achieve four consecutive AACSB accreditations. The university is currently preparing systematically for its next reaccreditation scheduled for 2028, focusing on continuous enhancement of educational quality and research competitiveness.

Following AACSB accreditation, the College of Business Administration at Sejong University established an AACSB Accreditation Committee, promoting ongoing institutional development in strategic management, educational innovation, faculty and student competency enhancement, and the integration of academic theory with business practice.
